Diogo Dalot & Rasmus Højlund invited each other to shine to help Man Utd win the final victory but achieved the worst performance in history on the closing day of the 2023 – 2024 EPL campaign.

MU created a series of worst statistics of the Premier League era despite winning 2-0 against Brighton in the closing round of the 2023/24 season on the evening of May 19 (Hanoi time).

In the 73rd minute at The Amex, Diogo Dalot escaped from Casemiro’s pass. The Portuguese player neatly controlled the ball before firing it into Brighton’s net. In the last minutes, Rasmus Hojlund scored a goal to seal a 2-0 victory for MU.

The win was not enough for the “Red Devils” to improve their rankings. MU ranked 8th overall, behind Newcastle United. In the match at the same time, “Magpies” won 4-2 against Brentford. Both clubs have the same 60 points, but the “Red Devils”‘s difference is far behind their opponent in the Northeast of England (-1 compared to 23).

Ending the season in 8th place is something that has never happened to the Old Trafford team in the Premier League era. The “Red Devils”‘s worst performance was 7th in the 2013/14 season.

MU has lost 14 matches in a Premier League season for the first time. Not stopping here, the “Red Devils” also conceded 84 goals in a season in all competitions for the first time since 1971.

MU conceded 58 goals in 38 matches in the Premier League alone. At the end of the season, they had a negative goal difference (-1). On average, the “Red Devils” have conceded more goals than any other team in the Premier League era.

In all competitions, MU’s 19 losses are the most since the 1977/78 season (also 19 matches). With one match left in the FA Cup final against Man City, Erik ten Hag’s team can break a 46-year record.

MU closed the 2023/24 Premier League with 57 goals, only 8 goals more than their worst performance in the 2015/16 season under Louis van Gaal. This achievement is 1 goal worse than Ten Hag’s first season.

MU’s season was ruined by a series of injuries, thereby causing his performance to fluctuate and become unstable. The “Red Devils” do not have a chance to qualify for the European Cup through rankings in the Premier League.

Therefore, the most feasible way for MU to win the right to participate in the European Cup is to win against Man City, thereby getting a ticket to directly enter the Europa League group stage. If they lose in the FA Cup final, the “Red Devils” can only compete in the domestic tournament next season.
