James Cameron’s Coastal California Paradise: A Breathtaking Haven Worth $33M for the Visionary Filmmaker

If you’ve always desired to be “king of the world,” this colossal Santa Barbara estate could be the perfect fit! The Wall Street Journal was the first to report that James Cameron’s 102-acre property in the gated residential and agricultural Hollister Ranch enclave on the rural Gaviota coast is for sale for a substantial $33 million.

The listing is held by Jeff Kruthers of Hollister Ranch Realty and Emily Kellenberger of Village Properties/Forbes Global Properties. “Buyers in search of active environmental stewardship and a California coast oasis will be richly rewarded”

In the late 1990s, the Oscar-winning film director and his wife Suzy Amis Cameron paid just over $4.3 million for the seaside property, which features an 8,000-square-foot main house with five bedrooms and seven bathrooms, as well as several ancillary buildings — just minutes from Drake’s Beach and miles of protected coastline.

Built more than three decades ago and extensively renovated by the couple during their tenure — including the addition of new Rocky Mountain quartzite floors and restoration of the original natural wood — the architectural wood-and-glass structure is highlighted by a fireplace-side great room offering panoramic ocean views through glass walls. The adjacent dining room is connected to the eat-in kitchen, which features custom lighting and cabinetry, as well as Wolf and Sub-Zero appliances of the highest caliber.

In addition to a luxurious master suite, dual offices, a movie theater, game room, and fitness center, the palm-lined grounds feature a lagoon-style swimming pool and spa, tennis court, and organic gardens. In addition, there is a 2,000-square-foot guesthouse, a 24,000-square-foot barn, a helipad, and off-grid solar and wind power capabilities, as well as two wells for irrigation and potable water.

According to the WSJ, the couple is selling because they are “too dispersed.” According to the news source, they own approximately 5,000 acres of land in novel Zealand and 10,000 acres in Saskatchewan, Canada, where they are developing novel fava bean and plant-based protein hybrids. In addition to having a residence in Crested Butte, Colorado, they also spend time in Los Angeles, close to the director’s studio space in Manhattan Beach, and in Austin, Texas, where he films occasionally.
